Alfred Jefferis Turner was a pediatrician and noted amateur entomologist. He was born in Canton, China on October 3, 1861. He introduced the use of diphtheria antitoxin to Australia in 1895. He was known by the nickname "Gentle Annie". Dr. Turner died in Brisbane on December 29, 1947.
